this is wat i learnt in soci 3101 class today. i think it's uber cool and it made me think about lots of things in society. it amazes me how pple nearly a century ago can think like this. presneting to you( at least from wat i understood from the lecture... DURKHEIM's conception of human nature/anomie.
individuals in society have infinite needs, desire and passion which are often unlimited. these individuals would seek to fufill/actualise these wants at all cost. however, in order for the society to function properly, these needs have to be restrained, controlled and be limited. this source of control would have to come from society which appropriate norms through social and moral channels. this helps to keep individuals in check and hence these values serves to regulate behavior. sometimes, when society is undergoing rapid social change, and when the new moral code is not quick enough to emerge due to a time lag, it results in anomie. anomie is defined as the absence of limiting and regulating norms. the unleashing of the human will leads to social and moral displacement.
i think i am suffering from anomie. durkiem darling, come to rescue me quick!
